The Heartbeat of Community

A beautiful powerful force, that nurtures, leads, and uplifts while creating stronger families, neighborhoods, and networks -- Black Mothers.
Black mothers have historically played dual roles: nurturing their children while simultaneously protecting them from the world. They are often the first teachers, the fiercest advocates, and the spiritual centers of their families.
With intentionality, grace and wisdom, Black mothers have preserved culture, traditions, and values that form the foundation of the Black community.
Their impact extends far beyond their household, mothering their children's friends, being a source of comfort for their inner circle, and leaving an impact on anyone they encounter for even the smallest moment. The impression of a Black mother, a good Black mother, is one that stays with you forever. Her presence feels like a warm hug and her voice can soothe in moments of discomfort and command peace in the midst of chaos. It's like the characteristics of a Black mother are innate -- the way she supports, inspires, loves and protects others.
Innovation and determination to make things happen, the ability to do things that others consider impossible is embedded in her DNA.
As much as we lean on Black mothers, we should celebrate them. They deserve to be celebrated, often. The role of a Black mother can come in the form of an aunt, grandmother, godmother, bonus mom, or adopted; whether formally or implied.
The energy, time and selflessness it takes to constantly care for others: mentally, physically and emotionally, in itself deserves recognition; and Black mothers do it without hesitation, constantly showing up for the people that need them; oftentimes without the same grace they extend so easily. Grace that is often needed as they balance careers, build businesses, advocate for themselves and actively participate in life on a daily basis.
Give them flowers while they can still smell them.
Whether it's words, acts of service, gifts or random moments of kindness, celebrate the presence of Black mothers and the legacies they create every day. The deserve everything the world has to offer, they're the first people we look to for guidance, healing or comfort. In Black mothers we trust.
